in Soon Choo’s The Fortune Cookie
Since the creation of cinema, love between male and female has become a popular topic in the motion picture industry. ... Other films offered the ideas of how love greatly influences and miraculously affects one’s mood, one’s romantic behavior and one’s impression. The Fortune Cookie, a romantic comedy short movie directed by Soon Choo and written by the OPie group, is an example. Encompassing most motifs of a love story: loneliness, sadness and happiness, the movie is about the attachment of two college students, a female (Pamela Chang) and a male (Soon “Michael” Choo). ... Having many ideas in common, Pamela and Michael soon hit it off. Soon Choo used the techniques of foreshadowing, irony, imagery and symbolism to effectively present a common belief that a romantic relationship will impact one’s attitude about love: from being a pessimist to being an optimist.
The Fortune Cookie incorporated the use of foreshadowing throughout the entire film to convey that love can completely change the attitude of an individual from sadness and depression to cheerful optimism. ... This is shown when Pamela’s face lit up for the first time; she smiled. When purchasing a dinner, the Chinese proprietor wittingly gave her a fortune cookie as a gift for being his last customer of the day.
