1982 U.S. History DBQ

The raid at Harpers Ferry helped to illustrate the changing relations between North and South between 1859 to 1863. As relations between North and South grew tense it became apparent that the main issue of contention was slavery. As time continued from 1859 to 1863, many people in the North began to change their view of John Brown’s actions, which caused the South to fear a northern conspiracy. Most in the North still disagreed with Brown’s actions however many began to sympathize with his cause and believe he had done what was right. Document B illustrates this point when it says, “ We [Northerners] made a subtle distinction[in regard to John Brown], forgot human laws, and did homage to an idea.” The North began to socially accept the actions of John Brown and even make him into a sort of hero. The South feared this reaction of the North to John Brown, and the South felt threatened by the reaction. The South felt there was a conspiracy in the North against Southern economy and Southern beliefs.
