Who was to blame for Macbeth’s downfall? Four people could be held responsible for Macbeth’s downfall, these are: Lady Macbeth, The Witches, Macduff, and Macbeth himself. All four of these characters play a vital role in the play, and each are present at the main crossroads of it, i.e. when the decisions are made and starts the ball rolling to the major events. Lady Macbeth is often lumped together with the supernatural as she makes many references to and calls to demons, “Come, you spirits,” in her famous speech where she cries, “unsex me here!” which is a very unnatural thing to be done. In fact in some plays, the same actress plays both Lady Macbeth and one of the Weird Sisters. She seems to have a huge influence on Macbeth in the first and biggest sin of killing Duncan. She almost seems to have mapped out exactly what she will do as soon as she has received word of Macbeth’s triumph and of the “greatness promised thee.” Not only has she decided that she would kill Duncan, but relished it and started to immediately work out the logistics when she discovered Duncan was visiting, “the nights great business into my dispatch.” And starts to persuade Macbeth, to which he, at first, seems very objectionable to, “we shall proceed no further in this business.” Eventually she persuades him to do the deed and finishes it where Macbeth hasn’t the strength by returning the daggers.
