The Case for Mary Jane Legalization of marijuana (also known as Mary Jane, Refer, Pot, Chronic, Indo and many other names) is a topic in the United States and world, which is very hot at the moment. Many Countries around the globe have made it illegal to posses or smoke marijuana. However, countries such as Holland where it is legal in controlled areas and places in Germany, Great Britain, and even Canada where there is a only small fine for possession. So why the all confusion, why is it tolerated in some places and not in others? Is it because different cultures view different things as wrong, bad or immoral? Is it because certain countries know something about marijuana that others do not? Lets go over both sides of this debate for “Mary” and let you make the decision on your own. Thesis: Both arguments have valid sides, however marijuana should be legalized Marijuana is the most used illegal drug in the United States. Nearly 69 million Americans over the age of 12 have tried marijuana at least once (www.nida.nih.gov). Many students use marijuana on a regular basis. These students may use lunch money, allowance, or steal to buy marijuana. It is also very easily accessible in many schools and neighborhoods. Study’s have shown that reaction time for motor skills is reduced 37% after smoking one joint and 56% after smoking two joints which could put people at risk (www.nida.nih.gov). Few of these studies have also shown that people under the influence show the same lack of coordination on standard drunk driving tests as people who drink alcohol. Another argument for keeping marijuana illegal is that it has been considered a gateway drug. Many times marijuana is the first drug a user will try before moving on to hard drugs. Marijuana, being a plant and a natural leaf is thought of as safe for many people who are trying it for the first time, it is thought, this is why they use marijuana first.
