Grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can. The wisdom to know the difference. In the film "Ordinary People" the complex relationship types between the main character Conrad, his parents and psychiatrist not only portrays an example of a dysfunctional family but also conceals the in depth message of the different elements that makes up a relationship. This film also correlates with the serenity prayer that is on top of this paper. Although the situations and relationship examples of this film vary, this allows me to explain how all the different relationships and situations Conrad went through tie in with the prayer. These things all share the common elements such as the level of trust, intimacy, attitude of verbal and non-verbal communications shown in the movie. I will further on explain the different relationships and elements in the movie and how it relates to the serenity prayer. I’m going to start out with the first line of the prayer “Grant me the serenity.” Serenity means peacefulness or calmness. This is basically what Conrad is asking for in the movie, peace with himself. After his brother Buck’s death and his own attempt to commit suicide Conrad is now looking to find peace within himself to live a better life. This could also imply something about his relationship with his parents, with the emphasis on his mother of course. Conrad’s relationship with his mother is very distant. The only time they converse with one another, is to discuss the things that Conrad has done, such as swimming, school work and etc., each time the conversation between them would start to go a little deeper, his mother would leave the room. It appeared that his mother resented Conrad in many ways; I think she blamed him for Buck's death. I also think she resented him because he survived and Buck did not and it was obvious that she favored Buck over Conrad. Also, I believe his mother resented Conrad because he tried to kill himself and was hospitalized. Not only did this make the family look bad, but it also brought up the grief of Buck's death. The mother is a major controller and when things do not go her way, she pretends they do not exist and leaves the room. Conrad’s mother did not give Conrad any affection at all, when Conrad’s grandmother wanted to a take picture with Conrad and his mother alone, his mother became very disturbed and was very hesitant to stand next to Conrad.
