There are many common characteristics which define the Middle East as a unique and unified region. While the most significant of these characteristics is the Islamic culture in general, the other similarities are notable in many ways.
The Middle East shares what is, or has traditionally been, one unbroken territory. Similarly to the northern European plain, the Middle East occupies a flat plane from the Tauros and Zagros in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. This lack of a natural barrier, at least for this core area, makes the region conquerable as one mass or not conquerable at all.

Islamic culture is the most important and most definitive characteristic of the Middle East. Whereas in the western democratic tradition there is, at least in the ideal, a separation of church and state, in the Middle East Islam is both the religion and the state.
