Applying the carrying capacity curve and the J-curve to the curve of lifecycles of civilizations
In studying environmental ethics it is apparent that there is a correlation between the carrying capacity curve, the J-curve, and the curve of lifecycle of civilizations. Even though the curve of lifecycle of civilizations deals mainly with political, economical, and social issues, we are able to apply the curve to population growth and the environment. The three curves can be viewed as interrelated and together can aid in understanding issues such as population growth, carrying capacity, and overshoot specifically. ...
The J-curve of the world’s population gets its name because it is actually shaped like a J. ... When you look at the J-curve itself you wonder how the earth can support this exponential growth that seems to just climb higher and higher each year. However, you have to take into account a dying off of the population once it reaches the overshoot point on the carrying capacity curve.
The carrying capacity curve is exactly what it sounds like. It is simply the capacity that the earth can carry. ... The carrying capacity can be increase by use of fertilizers and other new technologies, but it still has its limits (Pojman). We see the idea of the carrying capacity in the story of the Easter Islands. ... However the new capacity for the area is even lower than before due to damage done by the previous population.
