Sometimes, an author will arrange the plot of a story in a specific manner, in order to fit the theme of the novel. This type of plot in a novel is called a literary device. This particular book, When the Legends Die, is an excellent example of this type of arrangement. Hal Borland uses this method to try to convince the reader that everything dealing with nature goes in a circular pattern, or in other words, coming back to where you started. From Tom’s house, to his view on the Indian culture, this book deals with many rotating patterns. One of the most obvious of these circles is the place in which the story is taking place. Throughout the book, Tom visits many different places. In the beginning on the book, Tom is in Pagosa.
