Violence, its everywhere. Within a generation violence has cultivated from traditions in a
culture to a negative aspect in our society. We live in a society were violence is obsessed
about and exploited. Media and the exploration of violence directly go hand in hand. The
media, although there to serve in the public interest, has made a living in desensitizing
viewers to a grotesque amount of violence. ... With the use
of violence as their number one factor, the media has become effective in allowing
violence in the home of all its viewers. With its voice of freedom, films have become the
medias way of advocating and glamorizing violence. In this paper I will discuss a specific
film and critique its use of violence to tell its story.
"The Usual Suspects", is a film directed by Bryan Singer staring Stephen Baldwin,
Gabriel Byrne and Kevin Spacey. "The Usual Suspects" is a dark tale involving five
master thieves thrown in a shady police line-up, a situation that eventually leads them into
the grasp of crime lord Keyser Soze. ... Within the opening scene of the film, violence and crime is
evident. The five principal characters represent men who have chosen to use crime and
violence as methods to live their lives. ... The film takes place in the gritty
streets of New York were violence has to be maintain in order to survive. ...
"Action films present violence as component of a spectacular visual style, usual to
thrill or excite rather than to shock" (Sharrett p. ... The first act of violence is committed on police
officers. ... The act of violence in that scene provoked shock and an understanding of
corruption on both ends. ... The audience is being told a story by the "anti heros" and is automatically placed
in a situation were there is no good or bad and violence is used as a means of survival. ... The violence taken place on this
heist was dramatic and blood filled. ... This scene was an overwhelming amount of
violence, considering twenty- five other men died, along with the main character. This
violence created a sense of fear because the gunman was incognito ( a raincoat and a brim
hat) which allowed him to be easily elusive.
