“Being out of touch with reality, or totally involved in a reality that is their own” (“WFSAD: About the Disorders: About Schizophrenia”). This is schizophrenia, a disease that attacks the brain. There are many symptoms to schizophrenia, all of which affect the way a patient, lives their life. The symptoms of schizophrenia can and are often controlled by medications and therapy. Although the symptoms can be treated, the exact cause or causes of the illness have yet to be pinpointed, so the disease, as of right now cannot be prevented (“Schizophrenia”). Schizophrenia affects many people, changing lives with its symptoms and leading to more research on the disease and new medications.
“Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disease” (“Schizophrenia”). ... The disease can go unnoticed until the moment the person shows alarming symptoms or just completely gives into the disease (“WFSAD: About the Disorder: About Schizophrenia”). People suffering from schizophrenia, often hear internal voices, believe that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts or are conspiring against them. ... Once the disease is developed, most people continue to suffer from the symptoms throughout the rest of their lives (“Schizophrenia”).
“[Schizophrenia] affects at least 1% of the population worldwide, regardless of race, economic condition, or geographic location” (“The NIMH Genetic Study of Schizophrenia”).
