George Orwell wrote 1984 just after the end of World War II. ... Orwell believed that the
decline of a language had economic and political causes, and the languages of these
countries had deteriorated under their respective regimes. "If thought corrupts language,
language can corrupt thought" (Orwell, 52), he wrote. ... In 1984, language is used by the government of Oceania to
control thoughts.
To show how language can corrupt thought and dictators use language to restrict, Orwell
created Newspeak, the official language of Oceania. ... A language such as English often adds words which create more
knowledge and increase the awareness of its users. ... A language diminished becomes less expressive, therefore, minds are
easier to control. ...
In the appendix of 1984, Orwell explains the principles of Newspeak.
