A Real Bad Dream Did you ever have a really bad dream? One that made you glad to wake up after it was all over with? That’s what happened to Neddy Merril. He’s a character in The Swimmer, which is a famous short story by John Cheever, who is an American author who lived in the 20th century and mostly wrote about rich people. Neddy Merril is a rich person who goes swimming at some friends’ house one afternoon. Only, this isn’t just a swim around in a nice, blue pool. This is a strange swim that doesn’t go where Neddy Merrill wants it too. Here’s what happens: * Neddy Merrill decides to swim home when he’s visiting friends on a nice, pleasant day one summer. Not because he lives on a lake, but because he realizes that just about all of his rich friends have pools and he figures he can walk from pool to pool. Then dive in and swim to then other end and then walk to another pool until he gets home.
