Researchers conducted a study with a group of children from the ages of three to six years old over a three year period of time to determine the effects that sex segregated play has on early school competence. The researchers predicted that the experiences of same-sex play would be different for boys and girls. ... Scholars have presented the argument that because of the amount of time children spend playing in sex-segregated playgroups, they develop different skills, behaviors, interests, motives, and learning styles.
Certain control factors were used to make this study as reliable as possible. ... They evaluated peer play using what is called a “scan” observation procedure. They studied the moderating role of effortful control. Effortful control was defined as the efficiency of executive attention, including the abilities to inhibit a dominant response and/or activate a subdominant response, to plan, and to detect errors (Rothbart & Bates, 1998).
