Lincoln’s death was a tragedy throughout the country but especially in the South. This was because Johnson was a faulty political leader, the south’s federal funding would have been provided by Lincoln if he had not been assassinated and finally Lincoln’s strong personality would have persuaded Congress in passing amendments, which would have benefited the South. At the time of Lincoln’s death, Johnson took command of the unstable Union. Unfortunately for him, he would have proved to be a poor figure, later tried for impeachment. Andrew Johnson lacked the leadership that Lincoln possessed. Born a Southerner but turned Unionist, he was busy with his own agendas when he took presidency.
