Many people have no doubt heard of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film, ‘Psycho’. It is considered a classic by many people due to the lasting impressions it left upon its viewers. Hitchcock’s horror films stunned the world, he created them to get a reaction from his viewers, and he got them. Some audience members fainted, walked out and boycotted screenings but none would feel safe in the shower again. Horror films affect their audiences by creating suspense, shock and insecurity. In psycho, Hitchcock plays with his viewers emotions using the character of Marion Crane. Her death, which occurs so early in the film shocks viewers leaving them with a taste of the fear about to be unleashed upon them and upsets their sense of security. The theme in Psycho is one of split personalities. Throughout the film Hitchcock provides references to this. With Norman’s stuffed birds and the reflections frequently seen of the main characters. Psycho tells the story of Marian Crane, a young woman running away after stealing a large amount of money. While staying in an out of the way motel she meets Norman Bates. While showering at the motel she is murdered.
