Verbal protocol analysis

Protocol Analysis

A technique used in computer simulation is known as protocol analysis. ... In early research into protocol analysis, it was thought that collecting verbal protocols – getting people to ‘think out loud’, describing what they were doing as they tackled a problem – would allow researchers to identify the steps that they were using. ... That doesn’t mean that the technique is useless, though, Ericsson and Simon (1980) argued that extracting verbal protocols from research participants could be useful under two circumstances: first, as long as the person was describing what they were doing at that moment, rather than what they had done before; and second, as long as what they were saying was reflected in their behavior, so that it was possible for observers to correlate the two measures, if both of these measures were met Ericsson and Simon argued, verbal protocol analysis could provide valuable information for researchers.
