Slavery in the 21st Century
The word slavery is rarely used in conjunction with the 21st century. Yet there are over 27 million slaves in the world one wonders whether there are differences than those in the 18th century and 21st century. First of all, a census from the 1800’s shows that at its highest the world had 11 million slaves, while today an estimated 27 million people are smuggled in for slavery, causing 21st century slavery to be done at a much larger scale. In a similar manner, the justification for today’s slaves are strictly monetary or for pleasure, while in the 19th century it was either for agriculture, based on skin color and inferiority, or to spread Christianity. Furthermore, slavery in the 1800’s and present day is the same in essence but different in principle. ... Thus, the ways that 21st and 19th century slaves are different are that the principle of the slaves in the 21st century differs than that of those in the 1800’s, the trafficking of humans today is done at a much larger scale than that in the 1800’s, the justifications of slavery today and in the past are different, and lastly there are some people that feel there lives are better off living as slaves.
