From 1940 to the 1960s the Australian Government adopted the policy of assimilation. This policy aimed to assimilate migrants that were fair-skinned and educated into the Australian lifestyle, eventually hoping the migrants previous traditions would disappear. ... The policy of assimilation drew its rationale from the White Australia Policy and was devised after the war to increase Australia’s population each year by 2%. The Government chose migrants that would fit into the Australian community easily, these migrants were generally fair-skinned and educated. ...
The policy of assimilation did little to help Australian Aboriginals but they were given the chance to become citizens, share the same opportunities and live like white people.
