All of the matter that surrounds us is composed of substances called elements. Good morning Ms Seresier and fellow students In the current Periodic Table there are 112 different elements, 88 of which are naturally occurring. The other elements that appear in the table have been created in the laboratory and may exist for only a short period of time. The modern periodic table of elements has vertical columns, referred to as groups or families. The elements in a group or family have similar properties. These properties depend on the electrons that are in the outermost shell of the element (valence shell). The nucleus and the inner shells are the core of the element. The elements in one vertical column have the same number of electrons in their valance shell. The horizontal rows of elements are called periods. The period number is the same number as the principal shell of the valence shell electrons. The Table can be divided into three groups.
