Differences between the Civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt
The ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia both grew up in an area of large river systems, also known as the ‘Fertile Crescent’. ... Those were the Nile in Egypt and the Euphrates and Tigris in Mesopotamia or what today is called the modern Iraq. ...
There were several differences between the geographical areas of Egypt and Mesopotamia that affected the development of those civilizations. First of all, Egypt, because of the deserts that surround it, was mostly protected from foreign invading armies throughout most of its history, whereby Mesopotamia didn’t have those natural defenses and was open to attack by their enemies and competitors most of the time. Egypt was mostly isolated from other civilizations and was not influenced by other cultures that were present to that time in the other regions. Other people, in contrast, constantly affected Mesopotamia, because they used the Tigris and the Euphrates for trading and migration. Another difference was that the Nile could be easier controlled because he flooded in predictable patterns, where as the two river systems in Mesopotamia were constantly affected by unpredictable natural disasters such as hurricanes, large floods and heavy downpours.
This insecurity of the geography led the people of Mesopotamia to be more innovative than those of Egypt. ... As the time went on, they introduced the socket ax, pottery, glass, copper, bronze and iron throughout their empire and later on those inventions were spread to other civilizations.
