Across the country, thousands of prisons hold millions of prisoners. These prisoners consist of a wide array of people, from those in the wrong place at the wrong time, to those who have delved in crime their entire lives. Society cannot help those who, while normally obedient and good, fall victim to the designs of Fate. It can, however, protect itself and isolate the "real" criminals by slapping on their backs the sentence of a life in prison. This "honor" goes to repeat offenders, murderers, rapists, and drug dealers; people who know exactly what crime they commit, and yet persist repeatedly in doing it anyway, at the cost of other lives. Because of the permanent impact of the "criminal" stigma, these people should not usurp the money that should go to future generations. Because prisons do not act properly as punishment or serve as rehabilitation centers, the government should allot taxpayers' dollars to the task of attacking crime at the source: educating children in a caring and nurturing society, so that they will not turn to a life of crime to avoid the desperation and poverty of their lives, resulting in further desecration of society and more money poured into the void of the justice system. Of course, prisoners do, in fact, give back to society.
