English 102 Your Will be Done People like to be in control of their lives and so they make decisions based on their own discretion. Some people have certain wishes for their future; therefore, they plan and take every necessary steps to ensure this. In addition, some people fail to recognize the possibility of a higher being who predestined the future before it happens. In the 1961 movie Splendor in the Grass, the doctor tells Ace Stamper that he the doctor, is not a religious man, but he knows that ?You can?t reckon with the will of god.? This is correct with regard to the lives of Creon, Oedipus and Bud Stamper in that all of them realized at the end that they couldn?t change their fate. The doctor is correct with regard to the life of Creon in that he realizes the will of the gods. In the play of ?Antigone,? Creon refuses to bury Polynices, a traitor, because Creon believes that he is acting as a moral power and that his decision is for the best interest of the state. He ignores the warnings of Tiresias to bury the dead for the gods are now angered and deaf to their prayers. In response to this, Creon accuses Tiresias of being bribed. Bernard Knox says that, ?following this reply is a hideously blasphemous defiance of those gods Creon once claimed to serve: You?ll never bury that body in the grave, not even if Zeus?s eagles rip the corpse and wing their rotten pickings off to the throne of god!? (43). Creon becomes a tyrant and is prideful that he does not fear the wrath of the gods. In the introduction of ?Antigone? Bernard Knox says that, ? by the end of the play it is made clear that Creon?s action is a violation of divine law, and besides he has by then long since abandoned any claim to speak for the citizen body as a whole and in their best interest? (38). Creon made the wrong decision to not bury Polynices and ignore the advice of Tiresias. The wrath of the gods were executed when Creon?s own son and wife committed suicide and died cursing his name. The gods have taken away the people that are very dear to him. Creon was stubborn and not willing to take advice because he wouldn?t let go of his pride.
