Coming from a family where my mother has stayed at home to look after the kids, and my dad has always been the “bread winner” of the family; the role of women in society has always been a relatively trivial issue for me. ... Women, however, have worked hard for the right to work outside of the home. Throughout this essay, we will learn about the traditional sexual division of labour at home and work, and the subordinate role of women to men in general.
Contrary to popular belief, women have not always been relegated to full time motherhood duties. ... Men and women both worked equally in order to sustain a fully functioning farming operation. Men and Women both knew where their strengths lay, and most cases, were perfectly obliged to fill their appropriate role. ... Women on the other hand, seemed to be more skilled in the area of clothing production, cooking, and managing the kids. ... [Wilson 15] This shift in every day routine was the first step towards women being relegated to full time motherhood duties, and was the single most important event in the history of the modern family. ...
The question that probably most needs answering right now is, “why couldn’t women work in the urban centers?” The fact is, women could work in the urban centers; however, it was strongly discouraged for married women to do so. Single women, on the other hand, needed to work in the cities once they were no longer needed for domestic work at home. ... [Wilson 16] Women in the labour force most often worked in factories as domestics. ... The primary worry of men was about women’s future roles as wives and mothers and were probably very happy to see that most women looked at their work as temporary, and typically left the labour force once married. [Wilson 17]
As time rolled on, the perception that women were more naturally suited to their roles as mothers and wives increased.
As early as the 1820’s in the United States, child rearing manuals and magazine articles advised women about their maternal responsibilities, and clarified the importance of mothering, not only to the mother and her child, but also to the nation. Women, it was believed, were temperamentally different from men and naturally suited to their roles as wives and mothers, ideas given credibility by the church and by contemporary science. ... [Wilson 18]
As you can see, this is where the notion that women are more nurturing, and better suited for work at home comes from. In actuality, there is no evidence of this except for the popular view of most men and many women.
For anyone questioning the idea that women are better suited at home, there is no need to look any further than World War One, the Great Depression, and World War Two.
