Jean Piaget is considered one of the most significant psychologists of the twentieth century. He began as a biologist, but his interest in the development of thinking caused him to change his career path to one of genetic epistemology, or the study of the development of knowledge. He developed four stages relating to cognitive development, and how children see the world. Although not all children follow this exact pattern but in general the system is valid. Stage one is the sensorimotor stage, which lasts from birth to about two years. In this stage the infant uses his/her sensor and motor skill to better understand and explore the world, late in this stage is when separation anxiety occurs. In this stage, a connection is made between object and the effect that they create. For example, the baby may suck his/her thumb; to them it feels good so they will do it some more.
