Hollywood Old and New C: How does the director use that film's location as a way of developing a particular theme or idea? Lawrence Kasden’s, “Grand Canyon” (1991) took place in the city of Los Angeles. I believe that the location of the film had a great significance in developing a theme of what the movie was really about. I feel that Lawrence Kasden uses this location in a number of ways in order to relay some specific messages to his audience. Firstly, the city of Los Angeles was used because it includes people of all walks of life. The film included a producer, a lawyer and his wife as well as his assistant (lover), a mechanic/tow truck operator, and his sister and nephew who lived in the ghettos of LA. I feel that this location may have been chosen because it has a vast array of individuals in different situations. Also, it has people of different status, all striving for different goals. The idea of experiencing life in Los Angeles can be thought of on two opposite ends of the spectrum, wealth and glamour on one end, and poverty and crime on the other. Secondly, I believe that Los Angeles was used as the location in this film because at the time in real life (1991) the city was chaotic. Professor Feldman discussed in lecture that it was a city “under siege”, being controlled by helicopters and police.
