A Separate Peace “I’m just not good enough. Why can’t I be like her?” At one time or another everyone thinks these thoughts to themselves and wish that they could become someone else. Some of us spend our lives trying to become that “someone else”, while others give up the lie and embrace who they are. A Separate Peace by John Knowles addresses that people cannot measure themselves by the abilities of another person. Leper, a once quiet and reserved person feels that he must change who he is. “Only the things and the people who’ve been evolving the right way survive” (117).Leper doesn’t believe that he measures up the way he is in these tumultuous times of war. He thinks that he can make himself into someone he is not, someone who is fearless and can look danger in the face and not flee. This however, is against his character.
