... The works of Kate Chopin were greatly influenced by her family and personal tragedies. ... Oscar Chopin and a Family
1. ... The influence of her family played a big role on the quality of work Kate Chopin produced. ... Catherine O’Flaherty, later Kate Chopin, was raised in unusual circumstances, but in these circumstances her story ideas and writing style blossomed. The works of Kate Chopin were greatly influenced by her family and personal tragedies.
Kate Chopin’s childhood had a large affect on her writing. When Kate was four, her father died in a train accident. After the accident Kate’s normally extroverted family became fairly introverted (Seyersted 16). Because of this, Kate’s great grandmother began to raise her and expose her to classic literature. It was during this time that Kate began to spend time with her family’s slaves, learning their customs and dialect (“Kate (O’Flaherty) Chopin 1851-1904” 55). Through all this time, Kate was close with all her siblings, especially her half brother. When the Civil War broke out, her brother became a Confederate soldier, and because of her love for him, Kate took part in acts that earned her the nickname of the “Littlest Rebel” (Seyersted 20). ... In the fall of 1855, Kate enrolled in the Academy of the Sacred Heart (Toth xiii). Kate attended the Academy off and on for many years until she graduated. After graduating, Kate became a “Belle” and for many years was extremely popular among the eligible men (Seyersted 23). ... Among all these social butterflies Kate felt out of place and, though she was popular, found everything about this aspect of life boring. Eventually Kate found the man she wanted to marry.
The man that brought Kate happiness was Oscar Chopin. That Kate never really got nervous about her marriage is no surprise when her personality is considered (37). ... Oscar Chopin moved to New Orleans where they had a wonderful life with many children. ... Kate’s children are believed to have had an impact on how the few children that are in her novels are portrayed (Toth 75). Unfortunately on December 10, 1882, Oscar Chopin died. The death of her husband had little effect on Kate because of the many other deaths in the life (93). With these many influences, Kate Chopin’s writing became unique.
