For most students this study of law will be their first encounter with the subject. It often comes as a considerable surprise, and especially to those whose primary studies lie outside the field of law, to find that the study of a legal subject is not simply a matter of learning rules and regulations, but requires both the understanding of concepts and their application. Because of this many students become confused as to how they should set about answering a question set in a law examination paper, and feel that their previous experience in other types of examinations does not help when trying to deal with this quite new subject area. ...
Types of questions
Questions set in an examination in law will, in general, require you to either:
(1) write an essay examining a particular topic or point of law, but without the necessity of applying the law to any particular situation; or
(2) write an opinion as to how the law would apply to a particular, hypothetical fact-situation.
