In his epic novel, 1984, George Orwell vividly portrays how a totalitarian state can impose its will and maintain power over the people of Oceania through manipulation of media, constant supervision aided by technology and the threat of pain, both physical and mental. Orwell also displays how the methods in which Oceania imposed it’s authority, such as manipulation of the language and propaganda, are the key tools for maintaining a totalitarian state. The power and control a totalitarian state is able to hold is dependent upon a key feature. This important characteristic is having a figurehead, or a dictator. In this case, the omnipresent and all-powerful leader is Big Brother, commanding the control of the population.
