The Wisdom of Teams/Empowered Teams 2 The Wisdom of Teams/Empowered Teams: A Summary More and more organizations are discovering the potential impact that teams have on performance. When there is a need for experiences, judgments, and multiple skills, teams excel in performance. The authors compare teams to groupings within organizations and finds that teams are more flexible than organizational groupings. They can be put together, placed into action, refocused, and disassembled quicker than groupings. What makes teams work so well is that you have several different people who bring with them several different skills, insights, and experiences that are molded together. Teams can respond to multifaceted challenges, establish communications that support real-time problem solving and initiative, and provide a unique social dimension . The authors define a real team as “a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and working approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” (Pierce & Newstrom, 2002 “p.” 157).
