The consequence for David is that he is exposed to many bad influences like mistreating Indian women (or women in general), racism, bigotry, alcoholism and a disrespect for the law. He therefore doesn’t really have a good close role model on which to base his behaviour in later life. Only Ollie Young Bear, who maintains relatively minor contact with David, provides a consistently strong and good influence.
At first, Davids uncle, Frank Hayden, seems like the perfect role model for anyone. David describes him as not just being an impressive man but being more than that. ... At first, to put it simply, Frank Hayden appears to ‘glitter’ with good qualities. As the plot develops Frank lets himself down when he makes some very big mistakes which take away his ‘role-model’ status. No one can be a role model for anyone if they freely rape, molest and generally treat women or anyone badly. ...
Although the town looks up to his grandfather, Julian isn’t a good role model for David. Julian was considered to be a good sheriff and has a lot of respect from the community.
