In Alice Walkers short story “Everyday Use” Mama is telling a story about her family heritage and the way she lives her every day life. Mama hasn’t had the best life due to the fact she only has a second grade education, because of the closing of her school in 1927. Although Mama only has a second grade education, she demonstrates her “street smarts” in her accurate descriptions of Maggie and Dee’s character and in the major decision she makes at the end of the story.
Mama portrays Maggie as a girl with nervous tendencies and a low self-esteem. ... She asks Mama how she looks: “Have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dog run over by some careless person or sidle up to someone who is ignorant enough to be kind to them? ... When Dee arrives Mama knows what Maggie’s reaction will be so she is ready for her to run and hide. ... ” Maggie is very intimidated by her sister when she first arrives but this all changes when Mama takes her stand.
