The Screwtape Letters
In this epistolary novel written by C. ... Lewis, the reader can clearly see that Screwtape, a senior devil, is writing to his nephew, Wormwood and is encouraging him to tempt his “patient” into hell, using a tone which could be described as malevolent, because he uses hard words and examples to show his nephew what humans actually think. Screwtape uses many different words and examples to show his nephew what he should to do his patient and why he should do it. ... Thereby Screwtape uses many hard words to persuade him to do his “best” to tempt his patient into hell. ... It is like Lewis’ overall tone to describe the issues of humans by the narrator who is Screwtape. Screwtape says everything in first person point of view, so his nephew can see what he is thinking, and at the same time, the reader can visualize what is going on in his mind, and then, make an idea of what a type of devil he really is. ...
In this first paragraphs, Screwtape uses a tone of a grumpy old devil, saying words that can make his nephew doubt in many things, and then do what Screwtape is teaching him to do. ... To make his point through, Lewis uses Screwtape’s nephew, Wormwood, as the person receiving all these evil ideas. ... Therefore, the use of tone becomes very effective once he uses this evilness idea, because Screwtape is the man for the job, and Lewis uses him to create this tone, and with that, make an effective us out of it. ... The use of instructive tone helps the reader see what a teacher Screwtape actually is. ... In this few words, the reader can see what Screwtape is trying to teach his poor nephew. Thereby, the tone is being used to perfection, because the reader can see what type of advices Screwtape is giving to Wormwood. ...
Lewis, being the author of the book, represents all his ideas through the narrator, who is Screwtape.
