None of the Lovejoy sisters had much luck with men. They were able to find men, but were unable to hold on to them. Of all the three girls, Emily had the most trouble finding love. She had been married twice, been through a traumatic abortion, and was desperate to find love in the arms of a man. Emily’s relationship with men was a negative one due to her family experiences, Mudear, and her deep distress and selfishness. Since Emily had never been exposed to a healthy heterosexual relationship, she was unaware of what goes into making a relationship last. Mudear and Ernest had one of the worst husband-wife relationships possible. Everyday Emily had to experience the daily agony her father went through and the pleasure Mudear got from making him weak.
