Antidotes to Civilization: Is it for Everyone? Every person in today’s world look for every possible way to get away, at least for a moment, from everyday life troubles. They try to find a place in which it is quiet and away from any stresses or anxiety. Cub Mediteranee offered this get-away place for specific people that wanted to relax. Club Med was a type of paradise in which people would have everything they wanted from pleasure to fun. You wouldn’t have to worry about the troubles of life while you stayed at such a wonderful place. Club Med would become a type of Utopia where everything seemed to be perfect. The members of the club are known as Gms, which is short for congenial members. Club Med targeted specific types of people. Not everyone could enjoy the riches of such a wonderful paradise. It targeted specifically white people who were at least from the middle class. For example, Furlough says, Club Med was an experience constructed by and for white, economically advantaged Europeans, and later for Americans. It targeted people mainly from the high professions such as doctors, and it also targeted teachers, secretaries, and technicians as stated by Furlough. Club Med as discussed by Furlough provided an antidote to civilization. This meant that the club provided relief from daily troubles. It dedicated it purpose to serve as a total rupture with daily habits, a period of return to forgotten rhythms of nature. It is clearly seen that Club Med wanted to create an atmosphere where worries were not even mentioned.
