Before viewing the films, I possessed almost no prior knowledge about the conditions of Latin America. I did not know about the hardships these countries are experiencing, and I especially didn’t know about their contributions to the rest of the world. I couldn’t believe the shocking footage of these beautiful countries wasting away to nothing. After viewing the films, I became much more interested in the welfare of these countries, and how they can be helped. Of all of the things that I saw, the most devastating was seeing the poorly paid peasants. They work hard all day for barely enough money to survive. When I found out about what the fishermen get paid for catching the fish, and what the fish are sold for I was shocked. These people are not educated because they have to work so early in life to help their families survive. The support funds that are raised for these people are not even reaching the people because the funds go through so many hands that almost nothing comes through. After watching the film about the Peruvian truck drivers, I was appalled at the conditions of the roads. Since the roads are never fixed, the drivers have to be very careful that they don’t die during one of their trips. Many truck drivers have died from driving on those horrible roads. After they die, other truck drivers place stones in remembrance of the dead. I felt sorry for the drivers because this is the only way of life that they know. The quotes that came from the drivers were disturbing. I couldn’t believe that they would have to risk their lives to provide for their families. It makes me appreciate the fact that I will never have to risk my life for a job if I didn’t want to.
