Chapter 16 Telemachos is going about his business when he comes across Odysseus and the "swineherd", AKA Eumaios. The catchy part to this scenario is that Odysseus is actually disguised as an old beggar, who Telemachos later inquires about. After his silent arrival, citing that the dogs did not bark at him, Telemachos is greeted warmly by Eumaios with kisses, and hugs, and the whole bit. The book compares their encounter to a father reuniting with his only son after ten years. First Telemachos queries about his mother and is informed of her grieving state. Then, after Odysseus offers a seat to him, he ends up plopping on the fleece Eumaios drooped over green twigs and the trio eats together. Eumaios starts to tell Telemachos that his foe comes from the island Crete and took refuge with him for the time being, for he seeks safeguard. Telemachos basically displays that he cannot help so much in the area of protection, however he does offer the beggar clothes, a sword, and help with navigation. Telemachos then warns that the man should not "come among the pretenders" due the fatal threats that would surface. Odysseus breaks his own voice out now and challenges Telemachos as to why he doesn't banter the "outrageous", "tyrannical" men. He even proclaims that he would give up his own life to defy them. Telemachos explains he has no family to back him up and the princes of the island are out to get him. Telemachos then asked his "daddy" to tell Penelope that he has safely come back from Pylos and to send the housekeeper to tell Laertes. The "fine tall woman" Athena now enters the picture and speaks to Odysseus, who besides the dogs is the only one who can see her. She instructs him to take this chance to bear all to his son and devise a plan of destruction for the pretenders. In a stroke of her golden rod Odysseus is transformed back into a youthful, strong, macho-man.
