The main objective of the proposed nuclear waste disposal site at Yucca Mountain is to dispose of high-level radioactive wastes and spent nuclear fuel in a safe manner. In 1992, Congress put the Environmental protection agency (The EPA), in charge of setting the standards for protecting the public and the environment from exposure to radiation from potential leaks from the waste in Yucca mountain The standards set for this site are to be specifically developed by the EPA for Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
