The similarities between The Crucible play and The Crucible movie are greater than any other original work made movie combo I have ever recalled seeing. Arthur Miller first wrote the play and over 40 years later he wrote the screenplay for a different audience. Although the theme, the characterization, and the setting of both the play and the film are similar, differences between the two exist. Miller had the same message to convey in both the play and movie and he therefore did not change the theme. The Crucible was written at the time of the McCarthy communist “witch hunt” and was intended to raise the conscience of Americans. He wanted to enlighten his audience of the injustices imposed upon good people by the government. In the 40 plus years following, enormous strides have been made in what Americans do not tolerate from their government and therefore, although the theme has not changed, it probably has less significance. In the 1950’s, television was a luxury to the average family.
