July Day Spectacular I sit in the third row of gray rocks upholstered with lichen. Light pours from the flies of heaven on a thirty mile stage-set: and there, by the footlights of breaking water, oystercatchers, going through their old routines, put on their black-and-white minstrel show watched by a bandmaster pigeon with built-in epaulettes Norman MacCaig All the text in red is a metaphor The previous poem was written by Norman MacCaig and he wrote this poem to describe how the birds on the coast go through their usual routines of catching food and how much it resembles a theatre show, for example, how the soft layers of lichen on the rocks resemble theatre seats and how the white foam on the waves resemble footlights. Also while most poems only consist of a few metaphors, this poem has a fairly unique style as every sentence is a metaphor and in the larger view, the whole poem is a metaphor! The reason it is a metaphor is because he describes the actions taking place in front of him as a great theatre show, while in actual fact he is just sitting on the coast watching the birds search for food (in this case it’s oysters) The first metaphor he uses is “I sit in the third row of gray rocks upholstered with lichen.” In this metaphor he compares the soft layer of lichen covering the rocks to the cushiony upholstering of the seats in a theatre.
