A mandir is the building for communal worship in Hinduism and the focal point is a god or goddess whose image (murti) is there, so it is important to show respect. One sign of respect is for the worshipper to take off their shoes when they enter the mandir. Some worshippers may also wash their hands and there may be a bell to ring, to let the god or goddess know they have arrived to worship. It would also be usual for people to dress modestly as a sign of respect. This means, for example, that the women will wear long skirts or trousers.
