Finding Jamshedpur
At the turn of the century, the world witnessed a revival of iron trade, and Jamshetji Tata felt that the time had arrived for India to establish iron and steel works on a considerable scale. ... The site was close to the Calcutta port connected by a functioning waterway and had rail-road running through, which TATA could further develop for its use.
Jamshedpur comes to life
Building a steel plant was a titanic experience. ... 3,584 acres of land comprising the villages of Sakchi, Nutandih, Susidih and Jugsalai were acquired by Tata Steel Co. ... A few years later, on the 2nd of January, 1919, Lord Chelmsford, the Viceroy of India officially christened Sakchi as Jamshedpur, in the memory of Jamshetji Tata. ... Ask TATA…! ... Tata, in Jamshedpur, has taken care of all these aspects beautifully and made Jamshedpur a model city with few parallels in India. ...
To run Jamshedpur, Tata realized that it would have to involve itself in the people’s lives. ...
Civic Amenities: Life and beyond…
To take care of the needs of the people Tata started a separate division of Tata Steel, called the Town Division. ... Over the years this division has helped build the city from scratch by:
i) Constructing housing complexes: Tata has constructed well-spaced, well-planned houses with gardens for not only its employees but others as well. This gives the Jamshedpur skyline a distinctly different look from the high-rise clutter of metropolises and provides commodious living to people residing here.
ii) Constructing hospitals with ultra-modern facilities: The ultra modern 835 bed Tata Main Hospital offers high-quality medical treatment to the citizens. The city also has a number of specialised hospitals such as the Ardeshir Dalal Memorial TB Hospital, the Jamshedpur Eye Hospital and the Meherbai Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.
iii) Bringing the railroad: The Kalamati railway station, now known as Tatanagar railway station has become an important railway junction through the efforts of Tata. Besides transporting industrial goods for Tata as a company, several high quality trains run frequently to important destinations carrying passengers from and to Jamshedpur.
iv)Building marketplaces: Besides building the most basic and essential marketplaces in Jamshedpur, Tata provides the people of the city a much higher purchasing power than the rest of the state. This has made Jamshedpur a haven for marketers.
v) Building sewage treatment plants: The public Health Deprtment of Tata Steel collects and treats nearly one hundred thousand tones of solid waste every year. Recycling and sewage treatment plants set up by Tata keep the water clean and the river sparkling. ... In Jamshedpur, the smooth and wide tree-lined roads are built and maintained by Tata.
