Pio Sandino C. Gomez 1998-32393 Journal for On the Job Training (LIS 181) Last November I enrolled into the LIS 181. This subject required me to undergo training in a real library for at least 170 hours. I was at first confident that I could finish its requirements early as I only took 6 units for my course, namely LIS 200 and LIS 181. So I went on to look for student assistant positions in order to make the most of my time, as I intended to work on my OJT only on Saturdays. With this in mind I approached Mrs. Elagio, head librarian of the University of the Philippines Diliman, School of Statistics Library. I explained to her that most of the week I was free and able to man the control desk as a student assistant. I was thankful that she accepted me and so started my days at the statistics library. Unfortunately my plans did not unfold according to my intentions, as I found it difficult to look for libraries that can accept trainees to work on Saturdays. It was at the beginning of January that I decided to do my training at the school of statistics library. I was only able to get a months worth of salary from the month prior to Christmas vacation but my priorities had to be changed as I was already running late on the 170 hour quota. Soon Mrs. Elagio accepted my resignation as a student assistant and began planning what I could do to learn what a professional librarian does, and on January 5 2004, I began training under Mrs. Elagio. January 5 to 9 This is my first day as a trainee in the school of statistics library. Because I have already worked here as a student assistant for more than a month I was already familiar with the workings of the library. I was previously assigned at the control desk, so I had an idea of the library’s collection. It comprised mostly of math books, and books which contained data, for use of the students when looking for data to practice on. The journals and serials collection were the same. They were mostly updates on the theory and practice of statistics as well as collections of data. I also have already become acquainted with the other personnel in the library as well as the faculty and staff of the school of statistics. Some of them come regularly to chat or to have merienda with Mrs. Elagio. But for this day, Mrs. Elagio asked me to rearrange catalog cards. I asked why the library still used catalog cards since computer access was available. She said they needed to be done as a complement and as a back up system in case the computer system failed.
