Chapter thirty-nine is a vital chapter within the novel, written very differently from many of the other chapters in the novel. He uses many different techniques to convey the importance and drama within this chapter.
The chapter begins with Pip saying “Not another word had I heard to enlighten me on the subject of my expectations” which instantly reminds the reader of Pip’s expectations, namely that Miss Havisham had been funding him to become a gentleman and that he was promised Estella. The reader is led to believe this throughout the whole novel and this chapter is a vital chapter as it contradicts the readers belief. ... This development in the plot shows clearly how important this chapter is, as after reading essentially two thirds of the book our thoughts as to Pip’s future are suddenly dashed by the reintroduction of Magwitch.
