Giotto. Christ Entering Jerusalem. ... Capella degli Scrovegni, Padua, Italy
This is a highly simplified image of Christ entering Jerusalem (all the action takes place parallel to the picture plane, landscape and architecture are barely included). Giotto’ work places the viewer almost within the event, as one of the participants. The effect is achieved because Giotto paints the entire scene in the foreground. Giotto’ pictures have a three-dimension reality that that is remarkable in comparison with the artists before him. While most artists before him considered the viewer apart from the picture space, Giotto established a relationship in space between the beholder and the painting.
Giotto has managed to convey a lot through the facial expressions and the actions of the bystanders, even though a clear understanding of the human anatomy did not exist at that time.
