Life After Boybands

Justin Timberlake has come a long way from his days of “Bye Bye Bye” and “Dirty Pop”. Always seen as the most popular member of the boy band Nsync, many were quick to judge when Justin Timberlake decided to release his solo debut, Justified. People all over the world anxiously waited for the album’s arrival, wondering if it would be either another Nsync album without the five-part harmonies, another failed attempt by an egotistical band member who thinks he is too good for the group, or a breakout album that shows some boy band members do have true talent. While many were skeptical, Justified proved Justin Timberlake is a true artist. Co-writing all of his own lyrics, Justin Timberlake’s talent is made very apparent, writing lyrics many relate to their lives, and creating music everyone can dance to, whether it is in the club or in the car. With Justin Timberlake’s striking talent, infectious beats, famous producers and eclectic fan base, Justified has proven to the world that there is life after boy bands. Although Justified received very positive feedback from the majority of critics, a few are dissatisfied with what Timberlake has to offer. In the article “Poor Justin”, Scott Robinson of The Courier-Journal does not seem pleased with the results. Robinson focuses on Timberlake’s songs that he feels Timberlake wrote in order to gain sympathy from the public: “Never has one so aimless hit so dead-center and scored so much with so little ammo. If they offer a Grammy for Biggest Crybaby next year, we'll know who leads the pack” (Robinson 1). Robinson does have a point, several of Timberlake’s songs are about a broken relationship, but that does not mean that those songs are not well-written. Some of the greatest ballads are based on fallen relationships, but Robinson seems to ridicule Timberlake for using the same subject matter many have used in the past.
