Reflections The articles “Symbol: The Basic Element of Culture” (by Leslie A. White) and “Body Ritual among the Nacirema” (by Horace Miner) brought in to light many interesting points. White argues that in order to be human one must have articulate speech. Miner in his article talks about a strange North American culture that goes by the name of Nacirema, and focuses on some of the most “sacred” rituals of these people. Both of these articles bring up great points, however, it seems as though if you have not been living in the same environment as these writers you may disagree with them to a certain extent.
