I will be investigating how changing the length of magnesium ribbon affects its rate of reaction with hydrochloric acid. Equation: Mg (s) +2 HCl (aq) MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g) Prediction: I predict that as the length of magnesium ribbon (surface area) is increased, the rate of the reaction will increase. This is because there is a higher chance of HCl particles colliding with magnesium and more collisions occur between the magnesium and HCl. Plan: • I will conduct the experiment twice and calculate the average results. • I will measure the volume of Hydrogen gas produced during intervals of 15 seconds until all the magnesium has reacted with the HCl acid.
