... They have used an intense form of lighting and aperture settings to actually make the shot look very realistic. ... If you look at the lighting, you can see that by using a flash of light they can make something look more frightening than what it really is.
As the filmmakers have total control over the lighting sources, they can control the effect that they want the image to actually have. When compared to another example of this sort of nature you can see that different directors have different perceptions of what dark atmospheric lighting and illumination can have. ... This next example is taken from the film irreversible and looks at how an audience can perceive a graphic rape scene when the lighting is made to look very normal for the situation and not allow the audience to realise that there is a source of controlled lighting there. ... As the lighting is so low they have increased the aperture setting to allow more light into the camera, this allows them to set up the shot using low lighting and still allows them to get a very good shot. ... This scene increases the audiences’ perception and raises many questions. When you compare two shots that are similar in the fact that they have the same levels of lighting and that they change the way an audience would perceive what they see, if it had a much brighter level of lighting it would not have the same effect or even the same impact on the audience that the above original images do.
