Using the questionnaire adapted from Patrice Pavis, Theatre Analysis: Some Questions, write a report on one performance of a play you have seen.
The Woman in Black, performed at the Fortune theatre, London, was a combination of technical excellence and an extremely high standard of performance by the actors. The mystery of this play lies in the use of quick changes of lighting from bright to dim, the eerie set which divides reality and imagination, naturalistic sound effects and, of course, the actors’ abilities to comfort yet unnerve the audience throughout. ... As the play continuously jumped from past to present it was essential that both periods could be recreated in an instant to maintain the fast pace of the play. There was one costume rail stage-right and an old theatre curtain surrounding the sides of the stage which gave the impression of the theatre setting, as all of the present action was performed in the theatre run by ‘The Actor’. The old Victorian style portmanteau was used throughout to symbolise many different things: at one instant it became the seat of the train, another time it became the horse and cart, and then transformed into the bed Arthur Kipps slept on whilst in the mysterious house of The Woman in Black. ... This division of set also helps the audience to realise the change of period from past to present.
